The Italian State encourages investment in R&D through the discipline of Tax Credit for Research and Development activities . This measure allows to mitigate the financial commitment of the companies in direct terms, transforming part of the investment in R&D into a deduction usable through a special tax code.
The R&D activities eligible for the tax credit include basic research, applied research, experimental development, prototyping, feasibility studies … in practice, the object is extremely vast and covers every possible field of R&D. The tax credit obtained:
- It is equal to 50% of the eligible costs, intra-and extra-muros, incurred in the period 2015 – 2020;
- it can be used only in compensation and for every type of tax, starting from the tax period following that in which the costs were incurred;
- does not contribute to the formation of income and the tax base for IRAP purposes.
The research and development tax credit can be combined with other benefits and, in particular, with the benefits of the “Patent Box” and with the non-financed amounts of European calls for tenders (eg: POR-FESR)
